Notch Effect
What is it and how do I deal with it?
As you may have discovered by now, the guidelines do have some notch effect issues. We have received a number of calls and the common comment is "can this be right?" The first thing we do when those calls come in is to listen for the numbers. If they are in the "low-income" range, that's usually the source of the concern. We have been able to produce some dramatic support results. One example is a case of two children with "X" amount of support. When there is only one child remaining, the support goes up. So it's less support for 2 children then when one leaves the nest, support for the remaining child goes up.
What to do?
Check the "Analysis" link in Iowa Support Master. Before you print your Forms, just click on the "Analysis" button and scroll down the page. Look to see if there are warnings and if there are, go in and make some adjustments.
Patrick Wilson will be presenting a "Webinar" through the Iowa State Bar Association on March 25, 2010. Click here for more information. He will again speak at the Iowa Association for Justice at their Annual Family Law Seminar which will be held April 8 & 9, 2010 at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort in Riverside, Iowa. Check out the IAJ website by clicking here. Attend one of these events to learn more about how to avoid the pitfalls of the "low-income" notch effect.

The program was just updated on February 4, 2010. Click your "About" button and look in the white field window in the lower half to find your current version.
